BS EN 13348:2016 Degreased Medical Copper Tubes
BS EN 13348:2016 Copper Tubes
This is an European & British standardard regarding copper and copper alloys seamless, round copper tubes for medical gases or vacuum application.
The British Standard is the UK implementation of EN 13348:2016, and was published under the authority of the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee on 30 June 2016.
The European Standard was approved by CEN on 28 February 2016, CEN members like Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Greece and so on are bound to comply with this standard. There are three official version, including English, French and German.
Copper pipes to this European standard are suitable for capillary soldering, brazing or assembling by mechanical compression or collared fittings.
Application
This standard specifies the requirements, sampling, test methods and conditions of delivery for copper pipes.
Size range: outside diameter from 6mm up to and including 219mm
Seamless round copper pipes for pipline systems under vacuum or distributing the following medical gases intended to be used at operating pressures up to 2000 kPa:
- oxygen, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, xenon;
- medical air
- specific mixtures of these above mentioned gases
- air for driving surgical tools
- anaesthetic gases and vapours
Copper material requirements
The composition of copper pipe shall conform to the following:
Cu + Ag: min. 99.90%
0.015% ≤ P ≤ 0.040%
The copper grade is designated either Cu-DHP or CW024A, that equal to American copper grade C12200 and Chinese copper grade TP2.

R290 | Hard temper | 6mm ≤ d ≤ 219mm | 290MPa | 3% | min. 100 |
Notes:
- EN13348 does not require hardness figures in parentheses, the datas are given for guidance purpose only
- 1 MPa is equivalent to 1 N/mm²
- Tolerances for copper pipes with a nominal outside diameter higher than 108mm in material condition R220 (annealed temper) are not specified.
- Half hard temper refer to straight lengths copper pipes only
Dimensions and tolerance of copper pipe
Dimensions could be supplied upon agreement between the copper pipe buyer and supplier. However, EN13348 has provided standardized nominal outside diameters, nominal wall thickness, and nominal lengths.

Notes:
- Tolerances for copper pipe in R220(annealed) material condition are applicable only to mean diameter
- In case of dispute, to improve the accuracy when determining the mean diameter, the tube may be re-rounded before measurement
- Tolerances for tubes with a nominal outside diameter higher than 108mm in material condition R220(annealed) are not specified.
- a: including 6mm
EN13348 provides copper pipe's wall thickness tolerances in percentage of the nominal thickness,
Nominal outside diameter d, mm | Tolerance on wall thickness (e) e<1mm, % | Tolerance on wall thickness (e) e ≥1mm, % |
---|---|---|
<18mm | ±10 | ±13 |
≥18mm | ±10 | ±15a |
Notes:
- Concentricity (uniform of wall thickness) of copper pipe is controlled by tolerance on wall thickness.
- a: ±10% for R250(half hard) copper pipes of 35mm, 42mm and 54mm diameter with a wall thickness of 1.2mm.
Surface quality of copper pipe
To avoid contamination of the gas passing through the pipeline and avoid contain any detrimental residue, Winland's medical copper pipes are clean & smooth of inner and outer surface of the tubes.

Terms and definitions
Seamless round copper pipe
Pipe made of copper, hollowed semi-finished product, circular in cross-section, having a uniform wall thickness, which at all stages of production has a continuous periphery.
Brazing
Joining process using filler metal with a liquidus temperature above 450℃
Mean Diameter
arithmetical mean of the maximum and minimum outside diameters through the same cross-section of the copper tube
Marking of copper pipe
Example:
Copper tube EN13348 - R290 12 x 1.0
The copper marking starts with product name "copper tube", following standard name "EN13348", then the copper product temper "R290", and end with copper pipe's dimensions, or outside diameter & wall thickness.
Ordering copper pipe with Winland, please specify the marking, we use black ink to mark the content, which follows instructions of clients. For permanently marking, Winland will charge a marking cost.
Packing of copper pipe
Winland supplies EN13348 copper pipes of capped or plugged at both ends, in order to maintain the tube's internal cleanliness under normal conditions of handling and storage.
Further more, to ensure the straight copper pipe's fine condition after long distance transportation, Winland offers wooden case packing for each bundles of copper pipes.
For copper coil tubes, Winland seals the tubes in plastic, and put the coils on pallet or carton box if necessary.
