Type K, L, M and DWV copper tubes are designated in ASTM standard sizes. Copper pipe of these types has an actual outside diameter that 1/8 inch larger than norminal size. For example, 1/4 norminal tyoe K pipe's actual O.D. is 3/8 inches (1/4+1/8). For same norminal size, type K copper pipe's wall thickness is larger than type L copper pipe, and type L copper pipe's wall thickness is thicker than type M copper pipe.
Type M Copper Pipe Applications
- Underground Water Services -- Type M hard copper tube for straight lengths joined with fittings.
- Water Distribution Systems -- Type M copper tube for above and below ground
- Chilled Water Mains -- Use type M for all sizes.
- Heating -- For radiant panel and hydronic heating and for snow melting systems, type M copper tube (straight lengths) are used. For water heating and low pressure steam, type M for all sizes are used.
- Fire Sprinkler Systems -- Use type M hard copper pipe, where bending is required. Types K, L and M copper pipe are all accepted by NFPA.
- Compressed Air -- Use type M copper pipe as per requried internal working pressures.

Winland Plumbing Tubing (Type M)
The copper tube specifications refer to ASTM B88 type M, used for plumbing industry. The datas include copper tube outside diameter, temper, wall thickness, and etc. of both imperial and metric units.
For plumbing copper tubing, people used to classify the tubes by wall thickness. There are type K, type L, type M and type DWV copper tubes. Type M tubes have the second thinnest wall thickness, which is thinner than type K tube and thinner than type L tube. Compared to DWV tube, type M tube is thicker.
The size of wall thickness effects copper tube's mechanical strength, working pressure. Type M copper tubes are suitable for pipeline systems won't strickly require strength & protection.
Normally tubes of this type are applied for residential water supply projects. The tubes are just suitable for the project, and cost less.
Winland's copper tubes are manufacturered with pure copper (C12200, 99.9% cu plus 0.015~0.040% p), outside diameter of the tubes are the same, it means they can use with same size copper fittings for soldering and connection.
