The signing ceremony of the design contract for the alumina project with an annual output of 6.5 million tons of Chifeng Qihui Aluminum Industry Development Co., Ltd. was held in Shenyang in early 2020. The project is scheduled to start at the end of the first quarter of 2021. The first production line was originally expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2022, and the second production line was originally expected to be put into operation in the second half of 2022. After the project is put into operation, it will surpass the 6.3 million tons of Hydro Alunorte plant in Brazil and become the world's largest single alumina plant.
The public information of the project shows that the project is planned to be constructed in Dongshan Industrial Park, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, with a total investment of 17 billion yuan, using imported bauxite as the main raw material and using the Bayer method to produce metallurgical grade sandy alumina. Two high-temperature production lines, three low-temperature production lines, with a single-line production capacity of 1.3 million tons per year. The project includes alumina production equipment and public auxiliary facilities.
State Power Investment Group Guizhou Zunyi Industrial Development Co., Ltd. has a production capacity of 1 million tons in the near future to prepare for the resumption of production, or it will start to resume production in mid- to early December. The overall plan of Zunyi Aluminum Project is to build a bauxite mine with an annual capacity of 4 million tons and an alumina plant with an annual capacity of 2 million tons.
The project is implemented in two phases: the first phase will build an alumina plant with an annual output of 1 million tons and an annual output of 2 million tons of bauxite, and the second phase will expand the annual output of 1 million tons of alumina and 2 million tons of bauxite.
The actual output of China's alumina in 2020 will be approximately 67.75 million tons. In addition to the increase in alumina caused by the new production and resumption of alumina production in 2021, the actual output of China's alumina is expected to be about 72.5 million tons in 2021.
In 2021, China's electrolytic aluminum production is expected to be about 38.55 million tons. Based on the consumption of 1.93 tons of alumina per ton of aluminum, China's total alumina demand in 2021 is about 75,841,500 tons. Comparing the two ends of supply and demand, it is expected that in 2021, China's alumina market will basically show a state of excess and shortage.
