Papua New Guinea copper mine flights to Australia grounded due to virus cluster
The Brisbane Times quoted an Australian official on Thursday as saying that a flight from a mine in Papua New Guinea to Queensland in northeastern Australia after a group of immigrants tested positive for covid-19 Paused.
According to the newspaper, the state’s chief health officer, Jeannette Young, stated at a press conference that the five newly confirmed cases of infection were related to the Ok Tedi copper mine.
The report quoted Yang as saying that next week’s flight had been cancelled because the workers tested positive in isolation after arriving in the coastal city of Cairns, 1433 kilometers (900 miles) northwest of Brisbane.
The manager of the Ok Tedi coal mine did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by reporters via email.
